South Korea — FAQ

An eSIM is a digital SIM you load onto your phone before you fly — no plastic, no trip to a shop. You buy it online, and once you land in Seoul or Busan, your phone connects to the SK network (5G) on its own. South Korea has some of the fastest mobile internet in the world — median download speeds are around 205 Mbps — so maps, messaging apps, and social media load in a flash. Your existing number stays active for calls and texts, while the eSIM handles data only.

Here's a surprise: in South Korea, Google Maps doesn't work well — it won't give you proper navigation the way it does elsewhere — so locals and travelers use Naver Map instead. For the metro, Subway Korea comes in handy, and you can hail a taxi through Kakao T. All of them need the internet, which your eSIM provides the moment you step off the plane, so you can map a route and book a ride right away. On top of that there's the T-money card for public transport (pick one up at a convenience store or a vending machine): you tap it when you get on and off, it charges by distance, and it works on the metro, buses, and some taxis.

You switch an eSIM on before you fly and have internet the moment you land — no hunting for a shop after a long flight. You can pick up a local SIM in Korea at Incheon Airport or a carrier's store, but you'll need to show your passport to register it, and you end up comparing deals under time pressure once you're there. An eSIM gives you one price known upfront, a full data allowance, and your own number still in the phone for calls. No swapping physical SIM cards, and no juggling two cards as you move between countries.

It depends on how you use your phone. For maps, messaging, social media, and hailing taxis, around 5 GB usually covers a week. If you watch a lot of video — Korean dramas, festival livestreams, YouTube — count on a lot more: an hour of streaming can eat up to 1 GB. In that case, an unlimited plan is the better bet. Options range from 1 to 20 GB, plus unlimited data for 3 to 30 days; you can share it over a hotspot, too.

Yes — South Korea is one of the best-covered countries in the world: 4G reaches practically the whole country, and 5G covers more than 90% of the population. In Seoul, Busan, and on Jeju Island, on the metro and along the high-speed KTX line, the internet is fast and steady. It only gets patchy in the vast national parks and small mountain towns, where there are fewer masts — out there, your own eSIM data is more reliable than hunting for a signal, so it's worth downloading your route maps offline before you head out on the trail.

Any internet connection is enough to install it — wi-fi or mobile data — so you can set the eSIM up at home with no rush; installing it doesn't start anything, and you have a full 365 days from purchase to install. There are two ways to do it: if the QR code is on another screen (a computer or a second phone), you simply scan it; if you're buying on the same phone, you copy the activation code and paste it into Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The plan only starts when you first use data in Korea, and its validity counts from that point — so installing before you fly doesn't waste a thing.

A bit, yes. South Korea is rated 'partly free' (Freedom House, 66/100): the government blocks some sites — including content that supports the North Korean regime, pornography, and at times material critical of the authorities. The everyday travel apps — maps, messaging, social media — all work fine. On public wi-fi, it's best not to log into your bank; your own encrypted eSIM data is safer, and if you want extra privacy, you can switch on a VPN.
