Croatia — FAQ

An eSIM is a digital SIM card that you save on your phone as a profile — there's no physical card to insert and no need to visit a carrier's shop. You buy it online and set it up before you travel, and once you land in Croatia your phone connects to the A1 and Telemach network over 5G on its own. Your main SIM keeps your usual number for calls and texts, while the eSIM handles data only, so you have internet from the moment you arrive — handy right away at the airports in Zagreb, Split, or Dubrovnik.

You can buy a local SIM card in Croatia from local carriers such as Hrvatski Telekom, A1, or Telemach, and you won't need to register it with any ID. You do, though, have to pick one up once you arrive — find a shop, buy a starter pack, and slot the physical card into your phone, which can be a hassle after a long journey. An eSIM lets you skip all that: you buy it online, set it up at your own pace before you fly, and have a data package ready the moment you land, at a price you know upfront. There's no physical card to swap, and your existing number stays in the phone for calls and texts.

Croatia has a well-developed mobile network — more than 98 percent of the country is covered, including most of the islands — and our eSIM connects to the A1 and Telemach network over 5G. 5G has been available in Croatia since 2022, and the older LTE standard reaches practically the whole country. Coverage is strong both on the coast and inland — in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Zadar, and Dubrovnik — and speeds are easily enough for maps, social media, streaming, and video calls.

Yes, in most of the places tourists visit. More than 98 percent of the country is covered, including most of the islands, so on popular ones such as Hvar, Brač, Korčula, and Krk you'll usually stay online. Ferries and catamarans — Jadrolinija is the main operator — often have free wi-fi, but the quality can be patchy, so your own data is more reliable, handy for checking sailing times, for instance. Out on the open sea, between the islands, the signal can weaken: the masts stand on land, along the coast and on the islands, so the further you are from shore, the weaker it gets. It's much the same deep inside national parks like Plitvice Lakes or Krka, so it's worth downloading offline maps in advance in case the connection briefly drops and you lose the trail.

It depends on how you use your phone and how long you're staying. For emails, maps, and messaging over a few days, a few gigabytes is usually enough, but if you plan to post lots of photos and videos from the islands, navigate as you travel along the coast, stream music on the beach, or make video calls, a larger package — or an unlimited plan — is more convenient, since then you don't have to count gigabytes at all. There are packages from 1 GB upwards, as well as unlimited-data options for a set number of days. You can also share your data with other devices, such as a laptop or tablet, over a hotspot, which comes in handy when you're travelling as a group.

You can sort out the whole setup before you leave — all you need to install it is any internet connection, wi-fi or mobile data, and once bought, the eSIM profile stays ready for up to 365 days from purchase. Before you pay, make sure your phone supports the technology — on newer iPhones and Android smartphones you'll find the option to add an eSIM in the settings, in the SIM or mobile network section. Installing the eSIM on your phone doesn't start the plan yet — the day count only begins once your phone first connects to a mobile network in Croatia. That's the point from which the plan's validity runs, not the moment of installation. After buying, you receive a QR code and an activation code, and there are two ways to install it. If the QR code appears on a separate screen, for example a computer or a second phone, you simply scan it with the camera of the phone the eSIM will run on. If you buy the eSIM directly on the phone you're taking with you, there's nothing to scan, so instead you copy the activation code you received and paste it into Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. That way you can get everything ready in advance, and the plan only activates when your phone first connects to a mobile network in Croatia.

Having internet on hand makes getting around Croatia much easier, since the country stretches along a long coastline and hundreds of islands. Buses are the backbone of land transport — carriers include Arriva, FlixBus, and Čazmatrans — while ferries and catamarans run along the coast and between the islands, with Jadrolinija as the main operator. It's worth knowing that in Croatia a "ferry" means a boat that carries cars, whereas a "catamaran" is a faster service for foot passengers only. Trains are often slower and less frequent than buses, and Zagreb itself is easy to get around by tram. With data on your phone, you can check timetables and buy tickets on the go. One practical note: buses from Split to Dubrovnik pass through a short stretch of Bosnia and Herzegovina, so keep your ID or passport handy for the border check.
