Great all over Morocco

Used it around Marrakesh and out towards the desert. The signal held up even in the narrow medina lanes, and 4G was plenty quick for maps and messagin...

Morocco — FAQ

An eSIM is a digital SIM card in the form of a profile that you save on your phone — there's no physical card to insert and no trip to a carrier's shop. You buy it online and set it up before you leave, and once you land in Morocco your phone connects to the Orange network over LTE (4G) on its own. Your main SIM and its usual number still handle calls and texts, while the eSIM takes care of data only, so you have internet from the first minute after you land.

You can buy a local SIM card in Morocco from carriers such as Maroc Telecom, Orange, or INWI — at airports, in carrier shops, and at official kiosks (it's best to avoid street vendors). You'll need a passport to buy one, and your phone has to be unlocked. An eSIM lets you skip these formalities: you buy it online, set it up before you fly, and have internet as soon as you land, with no ID registration on the spot. Compared with roaming on your own carrier, which can be expensive, an eSIM gives you a single price known in advance and a full data allowance, and your existing number stays in the phone for calls and texts.

Morocco has a well-developed mobile network, and an eSIM connects to the Orange network over LTE (4G), which covers almost the whole country. Speeds are easily enough for maps, social media, streaming, and video calls. Notably, coverage reaches even remote regions with challenging terrain. Where fibre hasn't been laid, the masts your phone connects to rely on satellite links, so you usually stay in touch as you travel.

Mobile coverage in Morocco is surprisingly good outside the cities, too. The Orange network our eSIM uses usually gives you a connection in the Sahara region as well, and in the medinas of Marrakesh and Fez the signal reaches even the narrow alleyways. Gaps in coverage are rare and mainly affect extremely remote, uninhabited desert areas — if you're heading somewhere like that, it's worth downloading offline maps in advance so you don't lose your bearings if the connection briefly drops. Free wi-fi, meanwhile, is available at airports, hotels, and riads — though it tends to be slower and less reliable away from the big cities, and on public networks it's better not to use online banking or make payments, as your own encrypted data from an eSIM is safer.

It depends on how you use your phone and how long you're staying. Around 1 GB only covers the basics — emails, browsing, and messaging — or a short trip of a few days. For a week of travel with maps, navigation, social media, and the occasional bit of streaming, plan on 7–10 GB, and for heavy use, frequent video calls, or watching films, 10 GB or more. If you'd rather not count gigabytes at all, or you plan to share your internet with other devices over a hotspot, an unlimited data plan is the easiest choice.

It's best to set the eSIM up before you leave — any internet connection is enough for installation (wi-fi or mobile data), and you have a full 365 days from the purchase to do it. It works with newer iPhones and Android smartphones — you can check compatibility in your phone's settings, where the SIM or mobile network section offers an option to add an eSIM. Simply adding the profile to your phone doesn't start anything — the eSIM activates only when your phone first connects to a mobile network on the ground, in Morocco. How you install it depends on your device: when the QR code appears on a separate screen (a computer or a second phone), you just scan it with the camera; when you buy directly on the phone you'll travel with, you copy the activation code you receive and paste it into Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The plan's validity period — for example 7, 15, or 30 days — starts from that first activation, that is, from the first time your phone connects to a mobile network in Morocco, not from the moment of installation, so you can prepare everything in advance.

Having internet on hand makes getting around Morocco easier. The cities are linked by an extensive rail and bus network, including the fast Al Boraq train between Casablanca and Tangier. With data on your phone, you can easily check timetables, plan your route, and use a translation app — Arabic, French, and Amazigh are all spoken in Morocco, so a translation app often comes in handy. Internet access in Morocco is generally open, with no censorship, and using a VPN is legal (as of 2026).
