China — FAQ

An eSIM is a virtual (digital) SIM card — instead of putting a physical card into your phone, you load it onto the device before you travel, without a trip to a carrier's shop. You buy it online, and once you land in Beijing, Shanghai, or Xi'an, your phone connects to the China Unicom network (5G) on its own. There's one thing worth knowing that's specific to China: phones bought in mainland China usually don't support eSIM, whereas a device bought outside China works without any trouble. Your existing number stays active for calls and texts, while the eSIM handles data only, so you have internet from the first minute after you land.

Yes — and this is the biggest difference compared with a local card. China has an extensive internet filtering system (the so-called Great Firewall), which blocks services including Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. On a local Chinese SIM, reaching these services requires installing a VPN. An eSIM works differently: while roaming, your data is routed through gateways outside mainland China, so you use the internet without those filters — Google, messaging apps, and social media work from the moment you land, with no VPN or other software to install. It's an ordinary roaming connection, based on international carrier agreements. So you have access to the blocked services right away, though for navigation on the ground it's worth knowing that local map apps (such as Amap, which is also available in English) tend to be more accurate in China.

You can buy a local SIM card at the airport or at a carrier's office, but it comes with a few formalities: a passport and registration are required, reaching blocked apps still needs a VPN, and if the card is blocked for any reason, it can only be unblocked at the outlet that issued it — which can be a nuisance mid-trip. An eSIM lets you skip these steps: you buy it online, set it up before you fly, and have internet as soon as you land, with no registration on the spot and no need to remove your own card. You get a single price known in advance and a full data allowance, and your existing number stays in the phone for calls and texts.

An eSIM works with most modern smartphones: iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 and later, Google Pixel 3 and later, and many other Android devices. To check whether your phone has the feature, look in the settings — if the SIM or mobile network section offers an option to add an eSIM, your device is compatible. One important note for China: phones bought in mainland China usually don't have the eSIM feature, so it's best to bring a device bought outside China — the eSIM will work on it without any problem.

Mobile internet in China is fast and reliable, with strong 5G coverage in the cities. The China Unicom network gives you a stable connection in the largest hubs — such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, and Chengdu — where speeds are easily enough for navigation, streaming, and video calls. Coverage can be weaker at remote, open-air attractions, for example on the more distant stretches of the Great Wall or in the mountainous Zhangjiajie area, so it's worth downloading offline maps before trips like these.

It depends on how you use your phone. For maps, messaging, and social media, a few gigabytes is usually enough for a week; if you often watch video or work remotely, an unlimited data plan is a convenient choice — you then never have to think about usage. There are packages from 1 to 20 GB, as well as unlimited data for periods of 3 to 30 days. You can also share the data with other devices over a hotspot. It's worth allowing a little extra for the apps that come in handy in China — maps and translation tools can use data in the background.

It's best to set the eSIM up before you leave — any internet connection is enough for installation (wi-fi or mobile data), and you have a full 365 days from the purchase to do it. Simply adding the profile to your phone doesn't start anything — the eSIM activates only when you first use data on the ground, in China. How you install it depends on your device: when the QR code appears on a separate screen (a computer or a second phone), you just scan it with the camera; when you buy directly on the phone you'll travel with, you copy the activation code you receive and paste it into Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The plan's validity period — for example 7, 15, or 30 days — starts from that first activation, not from the moment of installation, so you can prepare everything well in advance.

For the two most important apps — Alipay and WeChat — you don't need a Chinese number; both work with a foreign one. In China they are all but essential, as they're used for payments, ordering transport, and booking tickets, while Visa and Mastercard are often accepted only rarely. Some other Chinese apps (for example for entry tickets or hiring city bikes) may, however, require a Chinese phone number. Having internet on hand from your eSIM means you can use these apps as soon as you arrive — from setting up payments to booking rides.
