Jordan — FAQ

Yes. Most of Jordan has mobile coverage, and the eSIM connects to the Zain JO network (LTE (4G)) — the same infrastructure locals rely on every day. In practice, that means internet in Amman and on the routes to the most popular destinations, such as the ancient city of Petra, the Wadi Rum desert, and the Dead Sea. One caveat concerns the area around Aqaba in the south of the country: in 2024 there were repeated reports of GPS interference there, which can make your phone show the wrong position or no position at all — the internet connection itself keeps working normally; it's the positioning that fails. So before heading into remote areas, it's worth downloading offline maps: a map stored on your phone will keep guiding you even when satellite navigation temporarily can't be trusted.

Jordan isn't covered by any low-cost roaming zone (such as EU roaming), so operators usually charge high rates for mobile data abroad here, and you only find out what roaming has cost you when the bill arrives after you get home. An eSIM reverses that order: you pay for your data package upfront, at a price you know before you leave, so the cost of using the internet abroad stops being an unknown. In Jordan there's one more trap the guidebooks warn about: at the Dead Sea, because of the lie of the land, your phone can log on by itself to a foreign network from the opposite shore. For someone on roaming, that means being charged on a completely different network than they expected. An eSIM package covers only the network in Jordan, so there's nothing extra to pay.

You can buy a local prepaid SIM card — paid for upfront, with no contract — at the airport or in an operator's shop, and the account then needs topping up with separate recharge cards. There's also a formality to keep in mind: when buying a starter pack — including a prepaid SIM card with a data bundle — the seller may ask a foreign traveller to show their passport. BlueSky eSIM simplifies the whole process: you buy your package online before you travel, at a single price you know in advance, with no shop to visit and no documents to show once you're there — and your existing SIM card stays in your phone, still handling calls and texts.

So what exactly is an eSIM? It's a digital SIM card: a profile your phone downloads over the internet and stores in its own memory. Unlike a traditional SIM card, there's no plastic chip card to insert into the phone. You buy the eSIM online and install it before you fly, and once you land in Jordan your phone connects to the Zain JO network (LTE (4G)) — so the internet is ready from the first minute, for maps, translation, looking things up, and contacting your hotel. The eSIM handles data only, which means your existing number stays in your phone and keeps working for calls and texts.

For typical use — maps, messaging apps, looking things up — a few gigabytes a week is usually enough. Packages range from 1 GB (for 7 days) to 20 GB (for 30 days). You can also share your internet with other devices via hotspot — sharing your phone's connection so that a tablet or a travel companion's phone, for example, can use the same package. Some things are worth sorting out online before you arrive: it's a good idea to buy the Jordan Pass online — a combined entry ticket to more than 40 attractions (including Petra, Wadi Rum, and the Roman ruins at Jerash). It has one more advantage: if your stay in Jordan lasts at least three nights, the Jordan Pass means you don't pay separately for a tourist visa — the cost is included in the ticket price.

You can install it over any internet connection — wi-fi or mobile data will do — ideally at home, at your own pace, before the trip. Adding the eSIM doesn't start anything yet, and you have a full 365 days from purchase to install it. The email you receive after buying contains a QR code and an activation code, which gives you two ways to install the eSIM: if you open the QR code on another screen, such as a computer, you simply scan it with your phone; and if you're buying on the same phone you're taking with you, you copy the activation code and paste it under Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The plan only starts the first time you use data in Jordan — its validity (7, 15, or 30 days, depending on the package) counts from that moment. Before you buy, check the <a href="/compatibility">list of compatible devices</a> and the <a href="/installation-instructions">installation guide</a>, and you can keep an eye on your data usage in the <a href="/Dashboard">customer dashboard</a> or in our <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blueskyesim.mobile" rel="noopener" target="_blank">mobile app</a>.

In the biggest cities, the easiest way to get around is to book a ride with Uber or Careem: you know the price before you get in, you pay in the app, and the journey is tracked — so there's nothing to negotiate and no need to watch the route. At rush hour you'll wait a little longer for a car than you would for a taxi, but in return there are no surprises along the way. If you take a yellow taxi instead, ask the driver to switch the meter on before you set off — Jordanian law requires it, and a metered fare almost always works out better than a price agreed out loud. Keep some cash in small notes too, as drivers often can't give change for larger ones. Between cities — from Amman to Petra or Aqaba, for example — a comfortable option is the air-conditioned JTT tourist bus, with timetables available online. All of this depends on one thing: internet on your phone, which the eSIM gives you from the moment you land.

Many travellers check before booking whether Jordan is safe. The country has long been regarded as calm and exceptionally hospitable: violent crime is rare, and in Gallup's 2022 report Jordan ranked in the top ten countries where people feel safe walking alone at night. The usual travel precautions apply, the same as anywhere: it's worth taking out travel and health insurance and not carrying large amounts of cash. When picking your dates, two things are worth knowing. First, the seasons: summer, from May to September, is hot and dry, with temperatures climbing above 32°C, while winter lasts from November to March — it can already be cold and rainy in November, and even snow is not unheard of. Second, the winter weather risk: flash floods are a real danger, and in bad weather even Petra is sometimes closed — with live access to forecasts and alerts on your phone, you'll have time to change your plans before the weather gets in the way. And if your trip falls during Ramadan, bear in mind that many restaurants are closed during the day and local transport timetables can change.
