Hong Kong — FAQ

Rather than a plastic card you slot into your phone, an eSIM is a digital profile saved in your device's memory. You download it online, so there's no trip to a shop or carrier outlet — you can set everything up over the internet before you even leave home. Once you reach Hong Kong, your phone registers on the Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) network (5G) by itself, and from that point you're online. Your main SIM and its usual number still handle calls and texts, while the eSIM takes care of data alone — so you're connected the moment you step off the plane.

No. Hong Kong has its own open internet, and the network filtering system used in mainland China does not apply here. Services such as Google, Google Maps, social media, and messaging apps work normally, with no need to install a VPN — unlike with a local SIM card in mainland China. That means an eSIM lets you get online right after you arrive, just as you would at home.

You can buy a local SIM card in Hong Kong from carriers such as Three, SmarTone, or CSL, but you have to pick it up once you're there — usually at a sales point or shop. An eSIM lets you skip those steps: you buy it online, set it up before you fly, and have internet as soon as you land, without hunting for a shop after a long flight. Compared with roaming on your own carrier, which can be expensive, an eSIM gives you a single price known in advance and a full data allowance, and your existing number stays in the phone for calls and texts.

Hong Kong is a densely built-up city with very good mobile coverage. An eSIM connects to the Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) network (5G), and the speeds are easily enough for navigation, streaming, and video calls — in the city, on the metro, and in the popular districts. The signal can be weaker on remote hiking trails (around Sai Kung and in the country parks, for example) and on the outlying islands.

Having data on hand makes getting around Hong Kong much easier. Unlike in mainland China, Google Maps works here, so you can plan your route without any extra apps. The easiest way to travel around the city is the MTR metro (over 150 stations), with the help of its app, and a good option for paying for transport and small purchases is the Octopus card (a prepaid contactless card available from machines at the airport, in metro stations, and in shops such as 7-Eleven). Uber also works — it lets you order and pay for a licensed taxi, which is handy because taxis usually take cash only. It's also worth crossing Victoria Harbour on the historic Star Ferry and riding the Peak Tram up to Victoria Peak.

It depends on how you use your phone. For maps, messaging, and social media, a few gigabytes is usually enough for a week, and if you often watch video or work remotely, an unlimited data plan is a convenient choice — you then never have to think about usage. There are packages from 1 to 20 GB, as well as unlimited data for periods of 3 to 30 days, and you can also share the data with other devices over a hotspot.

It's best to set the eSIM up before you leave — any internet connection is enough for installation (wi-fi or mobile data), and you have a full 365 days from the purchase to do it. It works with newer iPhones and Android smartphones; you can check compatibility in your phone's settings, where the SIM or mobile network section offers an option to add an eSIM. Simply adding the profile to your phone doesn't start anything — the eSIM activates only when your phone first connects to a mobile network on the ground, in Hong Kong. How you install it depends on your device: when the QR code appears on a separate screen (a computer or a second phone), you just scan it with the camera; when you buy directly on the phone you'll travel with, you copy the activation code you receive and paste it into Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. The plan's validity period — for example 7, 15, or 30 days — starts from that first activation, that is, from the first time your phone connects to a mobile network in Hong Kong, not from the moment of installation, so you can prepare everything in advance.
